NEW ORLEANS, La.
— New Orleans, Louisiana, will spend more than a million dollars on garden and yard decorations, city officials announced Wednesday.
The money will be used to hire new staff, renovate existing buildings and install new lighting, according to a news release.
The Garden Center will pay $1,500 for a decorative garden and $500 for lawn and lawn equipment, said Laura M. Occhipinti, executive director of the Garden Center.
The money will also go toward creating a program to help homeowners with landscaping, including the planting of new flowers and herbs, which are the primary sources of income for some Garden Center clients, she said.
The amount of the landscaping will vary based on the size of the garden and the amount of trees planted, she added.
The city will also use the money for a garden center and other related projects.
The City Council approved the spending in February.
The plan was approved unanimously by the City Council’s Public Works and Parks Committee.
The city has a $2.9 billion budget and will spend $1.6 billion on its garden center, according the city.
The center has been around since 1993.
