Overstock.com Inc. is adding its latest products to its growing list of consumer products in a bid to capitalize on the popularity of the curtain rod.
The chain is rolling out the curtains and curtains for its new Home Depot Inc. and Home Depot.com brands in its stores this week and will also begin offering curtain rods at its flagship Wal-Mart Supercenter stores in the coming months.
The company said it will begin selling curtain rods for $1.99 each and will include three different designs: one with a metal rod, one with an elastic rod and one with metal tubing.
Overstock is also adding a new accessory to the product line: curtain rod holders.
The holders can be used to hold a curtain rod, a kitchen curtain or a curtain that is hanging over the fireplace.
They are priced at $9.99 for the metal rod and $15.99 apiece for the elastic rod.
The company is also working on the “Kitchen” line of curtain rods.
Over the past few years, retailers like Walmart and Target Corp. have introduced curtain rods as a way to enhance their decor.
But most of the companies that sell curtain rods are still looking for a way for customers to customize their home decor and customize the appearance of their spaces, said Scott Miller, a senior vice president at the American Home Furnishings Association, a trade group.
“We don’t see a lot of consumer demand for these,” Miller said.
“I don’t think people are as into the idea of buying a rug or a dresser for a bedroom or a living room.”
Overstock said it is launching the products at the beginning of October and will expand them over the next two months.
The curtain rods will be available at Wal-mart Supercenter and HomeDepot stores in more than 100 cities across the country.
It is also offering curtain rod holder kits for $49.99, $39.99 and $14.99 at Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot and Target stores.
The product line will not be available online, but Overstock said customers can purchase them in-store.
A product page for curtain rod and curtain rodholder kits on the company’s website says they can be found on the shelves of over 20 Wal-Marts in more that 30 states.
The product page also includes instructions on how to install the curtain rods on the walls and ceilings of homes.
Over time, the company is planning to expand the products and have them available to the public, Miller said, adding that the company plans to launch the product lines at a later date.
“The curtain rods, as the name implies, are used to hang curtains and curtain rods around your living room,” Miller wrote in an email.
“They’re great for a quick look at what your room will look like and can be a great decoration tool if you want to add a little extra flair.”
The curtain rod line will also be available for purchase in-person at Overstock stores, but the company will only be offering the curtain holders to customers who live in certain cities, such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston, Miller wrote.
He added that the curtain holder kits are not limited to just Wal-marts.
“They can be purchased in most major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and Dallas,” Miller noted.
“The kits are available in any major city.
The only limitation is the size of the area.”
Over the next few weeks, Overstock will also offer a separate curtain rod kit for customers in select markets in New York, Miami and Miami Beach.
The new product line includes a different design for each product line.
The kit includes a $29.99 curtain rod rod and a $49 and $24.99 plastic curtain rod for $59.99.
Customers can order the curtain riser kit by calling 1-800-HELP-COLLAR at 800-621-4455 or visiting the company website.
The cordracking product is $34.99 per curtain rod or $39 for the plastic curtain rods and is available in select cities.
